The main function of the excavator engine is to drive the hydraulic pumps that provide oil at a high pressure to the slew motor, rams, track motors, and several accessories. Mostly, the boom can move only up and down, or in addition also shift towards the left and right of the machine. An arm is attached to the boom end that imparts the force for digging into the ground. A bucket is fixed at the arm end for carrying the soil. In addition, there are numerous other categories of attachments with the excavator that are used for boring, crushing, lifting, and ripping.
On the end of the stick is usually a bucket. A wide, large capacity (mud) bucket with a straight cutting edge is used for cleanup and levelling or where the material to be dug is soft, and teeth are not required. A general purpose (GP) bucket is generally smaller, stronger, and has hardened side cutters and teeth used to break through hard ground and rocks. Buckets have numerous shapes and sizes for various applications. There are also many other attachments which are available to be attached to the excavator for boring, ripping, crushing, cutting, lifting, etc.
Crawler excavator runs on two endless tracks (chain wheel system). These types of excavators are used in hilly areas where risks of sliding of machinery are on the verge. Crawler type excavator has low ground pressure because of spreading of load on large area. Therefore, it is also used where soil support is weak.
